A husband got called into a hospital. His wife’s just had a really bad car accident… He’s
pacing nervously in waiting hall expecting the doctor to come out of the OR. Finally
the doctor comes out.
‘How is she, doctor?’
‘Well, she’s alive… and that’s good news. But there is some bad news too… Your wife
will need to undergo a further rather complicated surgery and it’s not funded by the
insurance I’m afraid. It costs around 55’000 USD’.
‘Of course… Of course’ – says the husband.
‘Then she will need a period of rehabilitation. It also isn’t funded by the insurance I’m
afraid. Cost around 10’000 USD a month’.
‘Certainly… I understand’.
‘Ah… It will also be necessary for her to spend some time in a health resort that is
specialised in this type of recoveries… plus the rehabilitation will have to continue
there separately… None of that is funded by the government either. Cost about 25’000
USD a month’.
‘Oh my God…!’
‘Yes… Well I’m really sorry but this isn’t the end of bad news just yet! Your wife will
need to go through a series of medications too… Those are very expensive’.
‘How much? – asks pale husband’
‘Monthly? I’d say around 9-12 thousand dollars’

‘Plus a nurse of course… 24 hours 7 days a week. But here you might be able to
negotiate a better deal. Perhaps 15 USD per hour’.
Silence falls… Distressed husband buries his face in his hands…
Suddenly the doctor bursts out laughing, taps the husband on his back and says.
